The Coolest F-word ever
I was reading the Dear Sugar column on The Rumpus this morning (which is actually 3:00 in the afternoon, because my schedule is bananas). The column was what it usually is, an entertaining response to a generally well-written, if slightly mundane, letter.  When I read this: …perhaps the body is our final frontier. It’s the one place we can’t leave. We’re there till it goes.  Most women and...

Leaving on a jet plane...
A week and a half ago I was offered an awesome job in New Hampshire.  Currently, I’m sitting at gate C6 in PDX waiting for my flight, and I can’t seem to stop crying.  I’m super excited about this job.  I mean SUPER excited.  But it all happened so fast, and now I live in New Hampshire.  In truth the tears are only part sadness.  They are also part exhaustion, part frustration,...

“Legislative culture is nothing if not a reflection of American culture itself. The Senate shifts and modifies its machinations, but it does so only in concert with the subtle and not-so-subtle purling of American values”  — Senator Mark Hatfield.  I feel like I would get along with more Republicans if they were all like Mr. Hatfield.  He will be missed.

Use your education and take an educated guess...
Tomorrow, I will officially finish this round of schooling.  It’s not a particularly good time to be finishing school as evidenced by the huge discrepancy between the number of resumes I’ve send out and the number of interviews I’ve gotten.  That said, I’m glad to be done (though far less glad to start paying back my student loans).  When I was a kid, my parents asked me...

A week and a half ago, I had one of the best days I’ve had at work in well…ever.  I had a great conversation with one of our residents about his late grandmother and his recent struggles.  He told me about how angry he was at his mom, and even hinted at the fact that he still wanted her to love him despite her bad treatment of him.  He was candid and honest.  Later in the day, another...

The Happiest Place on Earth
I recently returned from a family trip to Disneyland.   There are those in my life who question my undying devotion to a place wrought with absurd consumerism, ridiculous fairytales, and corporate branding.  I’ve heard all the arguments about how Disney is a horrible company that does horrible things.  But, here’s the thing…I don’t care.  I spend a lot of my life caring. ...

The face of God.
I’ve been studying theology for a long time now and, generally speaking, the more I study the more I shy away from the idea of absolute truth.  I don’t know what happens when we die; I don’t know if Jesus was really born of a virgin; I don’t know why bad things happen to good people; I don’t know how to fix the church; and I don’t know how to make Glenn Beck...

Feed the Bite
I recently started a job working with pretty fucked up kids.  Sure, I could come up with a nicer way to say it; I could use clinical language like trauma, impulse control, and emotional regulation.  But, the reality is that these kids are, justifiably, fucked up.  Some have experienced unspeakable acts of violence and abuse.  Some have been left on their own for days while their mother is on a 3...

Martinis are made with gin
Having mostly recovered from the bus/vomit incident, I thought I’d get back to that fabulous post about my Nana who died a year ago last Thursday. Nana taught me a lot about life.  She taught me that Martinis are meant to be dry and are NEVER made with vodka.  She taught me how to curse (and get away with it).  She taught me to love fiercely.  She taught me how to needlepoint.  She taught...

Best laid plans
I was going to post something fabulous about my grandmother (who died a year ago today) and how awesome she was.  But then, on my way home, a guy on the bus threw up on me.  So, I’m probably going to spend the rest of the evening in the shower.

Looking for a place to land
I spent the last week in Boston with people I love; people I’m pretty confident love me too.  It was probably one of the best weeks of my year.  My people in Boston get my jokes about being a Calvinist, they get me free tickets to see my favorite team play baseball, they drive me to the airport at 5:00 in the morning, they willingly offer to drive a U-haul across the country if only I will...

Transference
A client came in the other day with a picture of his daughter.  I already knew that she and I are virtually the same age.  What I did not know is that she looks like my long lost sister.  In fact, she and I look more like sisters than my actual sister and I do.  In every counseling class I’ve ever taken we were told how important transference is and how we must always be looking for it. ...

I wish that I could say that such thoughts don’t plague me, but I’d be lying through my teeth.  I recently had a conversation with one of the brightest and most interesting women that I know.  She encouraged me (as she often has before) to pursue a doctoral degree.  I brushed off her suggestions (as I often have before).   This time, I offhandedly mentioned that I wondered if I was...

Age...and other thoughts
As most of you know, I’m working on obtaining my license as a mental health professional.  Currently, I am in the midst of my second quarter as a practicum student at a day treatment facility for chronically addicted men and women most of whom are now or were recently homeless. Of course, HIPPA (and common decency) prevents me from telling you pretty much anything about my clients.  But, I...

My great-grandmother's apple cake
My mom called me a few days ago and asked if I would make the apple cake for our upcoming holiday party.  The apple cake is a favorite family tradition not because it’s the best dessert offered (hello, flourless chocolate cake) but because it never gets eaten on the night of the party which means that we get to eat for breakfast the next day.  As a kid, eating cake with whipped cream for...

I don’t actually have a stash in my pocket, but I do have thoughts in my head, and apparently I’ve decided to share some of them.  In truth, this is primarily a product of my unemployed boredom. We’ll see how it goes.
